CD-R King Portable 3G Wireless-N Broadband Router

I've been looking for a portable 3G wireless-n broadband router for quite a while now. However, the choices are limited and the most popular 3G wireless-n broadband router, the Huawei E5 costs PHP 5,995. I find it quite expensive for such a device that I won't even use that often. Luckily, I came across this CD-R King product called CW-G4 3G Mobile Wireless-N Broadband Router.

As with most CD-R King products this one is cheap, at PHP 2,180 PHP 1,880 it's more than 50% less the price of the Huawei E5. Even though the router is cheap, it doesn't disappoint when it comes to features.

What's in the box

CW-G4 package

The CW-G4 comes with a LAN cable, a battery, manual, and a wall charger; something which you have to purchase separately when buying the Huawei E5.

Features

The device accepts USB 3G broadband dongles, so changing to different 3G broadband network is easy as you don't have to remove the sim card from the device itself. Others may find the device to be a little bulky because of the USB dongle sticking out of the router.

CW-G4 Administrator Tools

Like other routers, the CW-G4 comes equipped with administrator tools which can be accessed easily in a web browser and typing 192.168.2.1 in the url. Thus allowing the user to change settings like wireless security, ssid and other stuff.

The battery life of this device is rated at two to three hours of surfing time, and after testing it personally. I got two hours and twenty seven minutes of surfing time. It comes up short compared to the Huawei E5 which gives about five hours of surfing time. But, like the Huawei E5 this device can be charged while in use via the mini USB port.

This device can connect up to 30 devices, unlike the Huawei E5 which is only limited to five. I've tried connecting four devices at the same time and encountered no problems at all.

Pre-configured settings for different networks

The CW-G4 comes with pre-configured settings for major 3G networks listed per country. In the Philippines, the three major networks Globe, Sun and Smart are supported. The administrator tools allows you to configure your own settings so using this device for other countries is no problem.

I expected this device to emit a lot of heat while in use. But to my surprise the device doesn't heat up that much compared to my HTC Magic in tethered mode. The heat is barely noticeable even after hours of using it.

Conclusion

There is much to like about the CD-R King's CW-G4 3G Wireless-N Broadband Router. I find it very useful for everyday use. It is easy to configure and use. Though it may be lacking in battery life, the device picks up in its versatility in switching to different broadband networks. No need to worry about unlocking the device as it accepts USB 3G broadband dongles.

    1. Hi! Sorry I haven't tried that model but I believe they are the same except for the device input (USB, LAN), they even have the same model number. Yes you can use it that way, take out the battery and plug it to the wall socket, that is how I use it at home so the device won't heat up that much. In fact, I am currently using the device to reply to your comment, so far I haven't encountered any problems. :)

  2. thank's for the prompt reply. i forgot to add that i have dsl line at home and is it possible to connect the telephone line directly to this device bypassing the use of my existing old wired modem/router? just want to utilize full function of it. if it does not have the capability, do you have any idea which device can do both?thank's again.

    1. No, I'm afraid it's not capable of that. However, I think you can use the device as an access point by connecting it to the modem via LAN, you just have to change the settings. There are some PLDT (maybe other telco also) modems that are capable of being modem and an access point at the same. I'm not sure if there are any available in the market though because I use a modem + router setup.

    1. I have the same setup and I haven't encountered any problems. Hmm..Have you configured the router? If not connect the router to your laptop using the LAN cable. Once connected, open your browser, type in the URL 192.168.2.1 this will take you to the router configuration type in admin as the username and password. Enable wifi by going to Wireless->Basic. Also don't forget to set the proper broadband configuration, you can do that at the Internet Mode(3G) menu. :)

    1. What is the current price of this?

Im planning to sell my sun cellular huawei E5 and switch to this.

Just to confirm it will still power on without the battery connected right? (this is to save the battery's life from over charging)

      Thanks!

    2. It can still run directly from the power source even without the battery. :)

  8. Good day, I'm planning to buy portable 3G mobile broadband router for my sun broadband wireless postpaid.. unfortunately, I have no idea on what brand to buy so I did a canvass but due to limited availability, I only got 2 choices, one is this product that you reviewed and the other one is the Tenda 3G150M Portable 3G wireless router. In your opinion, is CDR King product more reliable than the other? thanks in advance

    1. Hi, I haven't tried the Tenda 3G150M. For other choices you could try the Huawei E5/Huawei E5830. The CDR-King product is ok, it's a good and cheap alternative of the Huawei router but if you can afford the Huawei E5/Huawei E5830 I think it's worth it.

    1. Hi, no it wouldn't. You just have to get your correct APN settings, you can see it in the Sun Bro dialer. Usually for postpaid the APN is set to fbband. :)

  13. Hi.

Or brodband modem na babayaran mo monthly.
